Do you get US citizenship 3 years after a green card?
3-year naturalisation is only for spouses of US citizens. Other green-card holders must wait 5 years — and there's no automatic conversion; you must apply via Form N-400.
The truth
US naturalisation runs through Form N-400 ($760 filing fee). Most lawful permanent residents (LPRs) qualify after 5 continuous years of residence with at least half of that time physically in the US, plus 'good moral character' (no serious arrests, no immigration fraud, all tax filings current). LPR spouses of US citizens qualify under a 3-year rule provided the marriage has been continuous and the US-citizen spouse held citizenship for at least 3 years. There is NO automatic conversion from green card to citizenship — you must apply, pass the English speaking/reading/writing test (waived for elderly long-residents), pass the civics test (100-question pool, 10 asked, 6 correct to pass), attend an interview, and take the Oath of Allegiance. Continuous residence is broken by absences of 6+ months unless preserved via Form N-470. Selective Service registration is required for men registered 18-26 while LPRs (failure is a bar). Conditional Permanent Residence (2-year card for new spouses of US citizens) doesn't count toward naturalisation until removed via I-751.
Why this rumour persists
Cross-pollination between the LPR rule (5 years general) and spousal exception (3 years if married to a USC) confuses applicants. Plus immigration scam operators love to inflate the timeline benefits of services they sell.
What to actually do
- Confirm your LPR card start date (the 'Resident Since' date on Form I-551) — your eligibility clock starts then
- If married to a USC, check both their citizenship date AND your continuous-marriage status
- Track absences — any single trip over 6 months can break continuous residence
- If men aged 18-26 when you became LPR, register for Selective Service immediately if you haven't
- Use N-400 'early filing' window — 90 days before eligibility — to start the process
