Does 180 points on NZ's Skilled Migrant Category guarantee a Resident Visa?
180 points is the minimum — not a guarantee. INZ runs draws periodically + selection prioritises Green List occupations + verified job offers. Many high-point candidates wait months for Invitation to Apply.
The truth
New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category (SMC, reformed October 2023) operates as a points-based Expression of Interest (EOI) → Invitation to Apply (ITA) → Resident Visa pipeline. Points awarded for: (1) Skilled Employment in NZ — 3, 6 or 12 points based on job seniority + salary tier; (2) Qualifications — Tier 1 (PhD), Tier 2 (master's / 6+ years bachelor's), Tier 3 (3-year bachelor's), Tier 4 (NZ Diploma 6 / 7), Tier 5 (NZ Diploma 4 / 5); (3) Occupational registration — 3 points if registered with NZ professional body (NZ Medical Council, Engineering NZ etc.); (4) Income at high multiples of median wage — up to 6 points; (5) Age — 30+ years young attracts 10-15 points; (6) Work experience in NZ. Minimum 180 points to submit EOI. INZ runs selection draws monthly typically. Selection prioritises: Green List occupations (high-demand list — engineering, IT, construction, healthcare), Tier 1-2 jobs, candidates with confirmed NZ job offers. Without a NZ job offer, scoring 180 is very competitive — most successful 2024-2025 ITA recipients had a job offer + at least 200 points. SMC eligibility leads to Resident Visa (permanent residence), eligibility to apply for NZ citizenship after 5 years.
Why this rumour persists
Pre-October 2023 SMC had different scoring (160 points + EOI). The new 180-point threshold gets quoted without explaining the competitive Invitation phase that follows. Immigration agents marketing 'just hit 180!' over-simplifies.
What to actually do
- Confirm your occupation is on the Green List or Long Term Skill Shortage List — these have priority + lower thresholds
- Secure a NZ job offer BEFORE submitting EOI — substantially increases ITA chances
- Calculate points honestly using the INZ points calculator — claim qualifications, age, experience accurately
- Boost points: NZ work experience (+3 per year), occupational registration, NZ qualification (NZ degree adds bonus)
- Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) provides a NZ job offer route — work for 2 years then transition to SMC
- Plan for 6-12 months EOI → ITA wait + 3-6 months further for Resident Visa decision
