United Arab Emirates — Green Visa (5-year self-sponsored residence)
Green Visa was introduced 2022 alongside the Golden Visa to fix the kafala-binding problem — Green Visa holders are NOT bound to a single employer (unlike standard Employment Visa) and can self-sponsor their families. 5-year validity with 6-month grace period on cancellation (compared to standard 30-day exit for Employment Visa holders). The freelancer subtype is the most-used by remote workers + creators who don't qualify under Golden Visa.

United Arab Emirates — Standard Employment Visa (2-year sponsored)
Standard Employment Visa is the most common UAE work route — bound to a specific employer (sponsor), valid 2 years, renewable indefinitely while employed. Probation can be up to 6 months. Free-zone employees follow a separate but similar process via the free-zone authority (DMCC, JAFZA, DIFC, ADGM etc.) instead of MoHRE.

Before applyingWork permit / Entry permit
MoHRE work permit + ICP entry permit (employer-led)
UAE-licensed employer applies to the Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation for a work permit + simultaneously to ICP (or GDRFA in Dubai) for the entry permit. Pre-arrival step — the worker enters the UAE on the entry permit and converts to residence within 60 days.
Heads up: Standard Employment Visa is bound to the sponsoring employer (kafala). Change of employer requires the old sponsor's NOC + new MoHRE permit — the 2022 reform removed the 6-month ban for early termination in many cases.

MoHRE labour contract — must mirror offer letter exactly
Within 14 days of issuance, the worker signs the MoHRE-registered labour contract in Arabic + English. The contract terms (salary, role, benefits, probation period) MUST match the original offer — discrepancies that disadvantage the worker invalidate the contract.
Heads up: If the registered contract differs from the offer letter, file a complaint via the MoHRE Tawjeeh service — the company is legally required to honour the original offer or face penalties.

United Arab Emirates — Family sponsorship (spouse / children)
Family sponsorship in the UAE is salary-gated — the AED 4,000/month minimum (or AED 3,000 + employer accommodation) is strictly enforced. Daughters can be sponsored indefinitely; sons only until 18 (extendable while in full-time UAE university education or armed-forces service). Parents can be sponsored but require a higher salary threshold (AED 20,000/month) + medical insurance for them.
